Current Information:Age-29 57, Silvester Road, Dulwich HMS Eden was a River Class destroyer operating out of Portsmouth as part of the Dover patrol. On 17th June, 1916, she was escorting the troop carrier, HMT France across the Channel to Le Havre. Approaching their destination, the steering gear on HMT France broke, the two ships collided and HMS Eden was cut in half. The forward half sank immediately but her after half remained afloat and was towed into Le Havre. 42 crewmen lost their lives as a result of the collision, one of them being James Maclean. |
